Woman of the Week

26 July 2010

Adelaide YWCA has recognised founder of Adelaide Roller Derby, Barrelhouse Bessy, as their "Woman of the Week"! Learn more about her and her contribution to building cool communities the world here.

ADRD could not be prouder of Mama B as many of the skaters in the league refer to her. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank her on behalf of all the members of ADRD and also the roller derby fans in Adelaide and all over Australia for igniting this wonderful community and for giving us the opportunity to experience the most amazing sport in the history of the universe Roller Derby!!!!

A showpony on the track, surprisingly Bessy is quite humble in real life and doesn't take praise well. But it needs to be said, she is amazing and much more than woman of the week but that's a great start. Thank you YWCA for recognising inspiring women like her each and every week. Adelaide Roller Derby salutes you and the good work the YWCA does to ensure the empowerment of women in Adelaide, a mission that is at the core of ADRD's heart.

Bout 6: Salty Dolls vs Road Train Rollers

25 July 2010

After an almost two month break from bouting, the Salty Dolls geared up to take on the Road Train Rollers in one of the most pivotal bouts of the season. With both teams battling it out for the chance to play the Wild Hearses in the Grand Final (Sept 26), tensions were running high on the track. With the Roadies taking an early lead, it soon became clear that this would be a tough trick for the Salties to pull off. Facing off against the Roadies notoriously good walls and new resident jammer par excellence, Mad Dog Mims, the Salties struggled to close an ever increasing gap. By half time, the Roadies were steaming ahead at 62 points to the Salties 18. With a strong crowd support for our nautical dames however, the Salties came out in the second half to try and pull off some of the comeback magic they've become famous for. Unfortunately for them, they also had to contend with the prowess of what was certainly the talking point of the after party - Mad Dog Mims and her mad jamming skills! With some truly spectacular footwork and aerial jumps, Mims looks set to become one of ADRD's most exciting players. Try as they might, the Salties couldn't get a foothold against the superior game play of the Roadies. By bout's end the score was set at a devastating 124 to 50 meaning the Grand Final will see the Roadies trying to slay the corpses of the Wild Hearses while the Salty Dolls and Mile Die Club battle it out to avoid the wooden spoon!

Bout 5: Wild Hearses vs Mile Die Club

10 July 2010

Amongst the chatter in the crowd, bout five between the Mile Die Club and the Wild Hearses seemed to be a forgone conclusion – the top placed team versus the bottom placed team in a battle of sheer pride. Once team mates, and now foes, this match was going to be charged with emotion, and not much more. Oh how wrong the crowd were! When the chips are down and the odds against them, the Dies ‘never say die’ attitude always appears, and everyone loves an underdog. The game started slow, and it wasn’t long before the Wild Hearses asserted their dominance in the pack, led by powerhouses The Little Murdermaid and Marshall Stacks. Jamming stalwarts Barrelhouse Bessie and Pixie Pincher were helped out by The Finnisher, pulling out some wonderful lead jammer grabs in an understated performance. The Mile Die Club, seizing the opportunity to experiment, showed moments of sheer brilliance under the tutelage of stand-in captain Pistola Balboa – herself having an enormous impact in her return to the jamming ranks. Bone Shaker demonstrated her versatility as a blocker and a jammer, and was aptly supported in the pack by the always entertaining Hell Grazer and Push My Toosh. Whilst the Mile Die Club seemed unable to capitalise on any momentum they managed to generate against the Wild Hearses, they left no doubt in the crowds mind’s that, on any given day, they are capable of big things.
